Includes selected letters, 1837-1857, from Jacob Whitman Bailey, West Point, N.Y., to his brother, William Mason Bailey, other relatives and close friends; together with a series of Jacob Whitman Bailey's letters, 1829-1852, arranged with commentaries by his son, professor Loring Woart Bailey of the University of New Brunswick; as well as miscellaneous letters and papers, relating to the Bailey family of West Point, and the University of New Brunswick, a note on the Slaughter family of Culpeper, Virginia, and an address by Dr. A.A. Gould, delivered at the meeting of the American Association for the Advancement of Science, August 19, 1857, on the death of professor Jacob Whitman Bailey.

Jacob Whitman Bailey (1811–1857) was an American naturalist, known as the pioneer in microscopic research in America. Jacob Whitman Bailey was born in Auburn, Massachusetts on April 29, 1811, and in 1832 graduated at West Point, where, after 1834, he was successively assistant professor, acting professor, and professor of chemistry, mineralogy, and geology.
